Tua Dam (Black Soya Beans in Sweet Coconut Sauce)

Tua dam is a traditional Thai dessert of coconut milk and black soybeans. Usually served warm, this sweet can also be eaten cold like most Thai desserts. Some recipes use palm sugar instead of cane sugar for a nuttier flavor. Recipe Servings: Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 oz (100 g) dry black soybeans
  • 2/3 cup (150 ml) coconut milk
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) sugar
  • 1/2 tsp (2.5 ml) salt

Directions

  1. Soak beans overnight so they double in size.
  2. Steam beans in a Chinese steamer for 30 minutes. 
  3. In a large saucepan, combine coconut milk, sugar, and salt. Boil until sugar dissolves.
  4. Place beans in serving dishes and top with warm coconut sugar mixture.
