Government Administrative Divisions
Thailand is a unitary state made up of 76 provinces (changwat), which are divided into 878 districts (amphoe) and 50 urban districts (khet) of Bangkok. The districts are further subdivided into 7,225 subdistricts (tambon), while Bangkok’s urban districts are subdivided into 180 administrative units (khwaeng).
A national constitution drafted in 1997 paved the way for more decentralization, but the central government’s Ministry of the Interior has largely resisted transferring power to the local governments. The provinces have little in the way of independent autonomy but rather exist mostly as administrative regions of the central government. Each province is led by a governor appointed by the central government. The districts are politically subordinate to the provinces and led by a chief officer who is appointed by the Ministry of the Interior.
The subdistricts, as the most local level of government, have somewhat more local autonomy. They are administered by locally elected representative councils. The subdistricts within the cities of Bangkok and Pattaya take a somewhat different form.
