Travel Essentials: Visa and Passport

Additional Restrictions

  • Foreigners entering Thailand by land from neighboring countries other than Malaysia are permitted a 15-day stay
  • Travelers entering Thailand under the tourist visa exemption must possess adequate finances for the duration of the stay; see Visa-Exempt below
  • Visa applicants who have traveled from or through countries declared Yellow Fever Infected Areas must provide an International Health Certificate proving that they have received a yellow fever vaccination

Passport

Passports are required for all travelers. Passports must be valid for at least six months past the visa application date, if applicable, or the arrival date.

Visa

Citizens of Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States do not need a visa to enter Thailand for a tourist visit of up to 30 days.

Visa-Exempt

Citizens of the following countries do not need a visa for a tourist visit of up to 90 days: Brazil, Peru, and South Korea. These travelers must possess adequate finances for the duration of the stay in Thailand (i.e., cash 10,000 Baht per person or 20,000 Baht per family).

Citizens of the following countries do not need a visa for a tourist visit of up to 30 days: Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Brunei, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Iceland, Japan, Kuwait, Laos, Luxembourg, Macao SAR, Malaysia, Monaco, Mongolia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Philippines, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, and Vietnam. These travelers must possess adequate finances for the duration of the stay in Thailand (i.e., cash 10,000 Baht per person or 20,000 Baht per family).

Visa Required

Citizens of the following countries entering Thailand for tourist purposes for up to 15 days may obtain a tourist visa on arrival: Bhutan, China, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, India, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Maldives, Mauritius, Oman, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Taiwan, and Ukraine.

Citizens of countries not mentioned in this section or in section Visa-Exempt are required to obtain a visa to enter Thailand.

Visa Requirements

The following documents are required to obtain a tourist visa: 

  • Passport or travel document validity for at least six months
  • Completed visa application form
  • Recent passport-sized photograph
  • Airline ticket paid in full
  • Evidence of adequate finances (10,000 Baht per person or 20,000 Baht per family)

Visa Types

Thailand issues the following types of visas:

  • Tourist Visas
    • Tourist Visa for a stay of up to 30 days in three months
    • Tourist Visa for a stay of up to 60 days in six months
  • Transit Visas
    • Transit Visa (category TS) for a stay of up to 30 days
    • Transit Visa for Sport (category S)
  • Non-Immigrant Visas
    • Non-Immigrant Visa for Business/Work (category B)
    • Non-Immigrant Visa for Official Duties (category F)
    • Non-Immigrant Visa for Students, Conference Attendees, or Foreign Buddhist Monks (category ED)
    • Non-Immigrant Visa for Film Producers and Journalists (category M)
    • Non-Immigrant Visa for Missionaries/Religious Leaders (category R)
    • Non-Immigrant Visa for Scientific Research, Training, or Teaching (category RS)
    • Non-Immigrant Visa for "Other Purposes," including Family Visit, Sports, Medical Treatment, etc. (category O)
    • Non-Immigrant Visa for Retiree Stay (category O-A)
  • Diplomatic/Official Visa
  • Courtesy Visa
